Evidence indicates that astaxanthin reduces muscle damage after exercise. Muscle damage is a normal consequence of exercise and one of the driving factors behind muscle growth. One study in professional soccer players showed that taking 4 mg of astaxanthin for 90 days reduced circulating markers of muscle damage – creatine kinase and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) – compared to a placebo (1). These findings were supported by another study in soccer players, suggesting that taking 4 mg of astaxanthin daily reduced inflammation and oxidative stress by attenuating training-induced muscle damage (2).
